The Dodgers have amassed an impressive amount of talent by focusing on drafting high school players with great physical skills. Edwin Jackson went 6-4 with a 5.86 ERA in Triple-A, ruining any chance of contributing in Los Angeles. His velocity stayed intact, but he tended to overthrow and showed poor command (1.3 K/BB). James Loney struggled in high Class A, hitting .238 with four homors, but a fractured fingertip and infection affected him all season. He remains an outstanding outfielder. Joel Guzman finally demonstrated his potential, hitting .297-23-86 between Class AA and high Class A. His size helps him deliver plus power, but his range is limited at shortstop, making a change of positions likely.

Chad Billingsley, a year removed from high school, dominated with his 97-mph fastball and slider. He went 11-4 with a 2.55 ERA and 10.6 strikeouts per game between Class AA and high Class A. Chuck Tiffany was untouchable at times during the season, showing a plus curveball and an 87-92-mph fastball. In low Class A, he posted a 3.70 ERA and 12.7 strikeouts per game. Greg Miller missed the last season with shoulder soreness, but has big-league stuff. He commands four pitches, featuring a plus curveball, and can be dominant.

Andy LaRoche, with his bat speed and plate discipline, hit .259-23-77 with 14 steals between two Class-A levels. The brother of second-year Atlanta Braves first baseman Adam LaRoche, he made a smooth defensive transition to third base. Yhency Brazoban took over as Eric Gagne's setup man in Los Angeles, posting a 2.48 ERA.

Rookie: Joel Guzman
SHORTSTOP (6-4, 198)

One of the biggest shortstops you'll find, Joel Guzman is coming off the kind of offensive season that has long been predicted of him. He has impressive bat speed and shows plus power potential, but a long swing and marginal plate discipline (0.28 BB/K) make him susceptible to breaking pitches. Between Double-A and high Class A, he hit .297 with 23 home runs and a .540 slugging percentage. He is a good athlete with plenty of agility, but he has already seen a reduction in his speed (4.4 seconds to first base).

In addition to his offensive outburst in 2004, he improved his defensive play at shortstop, practically cutting his error total in half (20 versus 39) by not rushing his throws. He has plus arm strength and above-average hands, but his range is average and will only worsen as he matures.
Long-term, Guzrnan will likely wind up at third base, a position that Adrian Beltre's departure for Seattle has opened up in Los Angeles.
